Cubs’ Dansby Swanson injury update will get fans’ attention

The Chicago Cubs have been playing pretty well as of late, haven’t they? After narrowly missing out on the playoffs last season, they’ve picked up where they left off in 2024. At the time of writing, they are 25-20 and are second in the NL Central. In the last few games, they’ve been able to win without one of their key pieces.

Dansby Swanson, one of their big acquisitions during the 2023 offseason, has been out of commission since May 10. The Cubs star shortstop was injured during a play in late April. After a few days of playing through pain, the team decided to shut him down temporarily. Now, Swanson is slowly but surely making his way back to the field, per MLB’s latest report.

“(Cubs SS) Swanson was placed on the injured list on May 10 (retroactive to May 8) after he was unable to play through discomfort in his right knee, stemming from pain he felt after a slide on April 25. Following a period of rest, recovery and treatment, Swanson did some light running and agility work and played catch on May 15 in Atlanta. He continued to ramp up his activity on May 16 at Wrigley Field, including fielding ground balls. (Last updated: May 16)”

With Swanson out, the Cubs have used a bevy of infielders to replace the All-Star shortstop. Thankfully, their lineup has been sturdy enough to be able to hold their own even with an injury. Still, they would definetely prefer to have Swanson around instead of having the star sit from the bench.

Cubs’ strong start

Even without Swanson, the Cubs have been holding their own and then some against some tough competition. Their lineup boasts a lot of solid hitters, including reigning Comeback Player of the Year Cody Bellinger and Seiya Suzuki. From top to bottom, Chicago has some pretty good players.

Their true strength, though, lies in the Cubs’ pitching staff. The star of the show is Japanese sensation Shota Imanaga. Imanaga is on an unprecedented pace in the MLB, with an ERA of 0.96. No one, not even the best pitchers in history, have been able to maintain a pace like that. He is flanked by Justin Steele, Jordan Wicks, Javier Assad, and Jameson Taillon. That’s a pretty solid group.

Last season, the Cubs came oh-so-close to making it to the playoffs. However, a tragic collapse in the final few games cost them the Wild Card Spot. This season, Chicago is hoping to avoid the Wild Card race by securing the top seed in the NL Central. The Brewers continue to have control of the division for now, but they are just within striking distance.

It’s been a while since the Cubs have been this competitive in the MLB. It’s almost a year since this franchise went on that legendary World Series run. Will they be able to recapture that magic and go on a deep playoff run? To do that, they will need everyone on the roster to be healthy AND ready when the time comes. Can they do it?
